Sustainable Laundry 101

Build your Own Clothesline

clothesline-fold-sqWith clothesline mania sweeping across the Capital Region, it's obvious that Sustainable Laundry 101 has caused quite the buzz. Unfortunately, registration for The free Sustainable U clothesline kit giveaway period has ended but you can still make a commitment to energy savings in the laundry room by building your own clothesline at home.

You'll be happy to know that it's relatively easy to make your own clothesline kit. Follow the following 5 steps and you'll be well on your way to energy savings in no time.

clothesline-pulley-hhDetermine What Kind of Clothesline Will Work Best For Your Home - There are several options for indoor and outdoor clotheslines.

  • Folding (Outdoor)
  • Pulley (Outdoor)
  • Folding (Indoor)
  • Retractable (Indoor/Outdoor)

Decide Where You'll Put It - If possible, it's best to put your clothesline away from trees and any overhanging wires to avoid tree sap and bird droppings.

clothesline-retract-sqPurchase Your Clothesline - Visit your local hardware store and pick up a retractable, folding or pulley clothesline for your house. While at the hardware store, don't forget to pick up some clothes pegs to hang your clothes from the line.

Installing Your Clothesline - The indoor folding and indoor/outdoor retractable clotheslines will require a little bit of assembly or installation. The outdoor pulley and foldaway clotheslines will likely require a little more work to set-up and possibly the installation of support poles. Web-search "build your own outdoor clothesline" to find more installation ideas and how-to's.

clothesline-wood-sqHang em' Up - Once you have your clothesline installed, it's as easy as sort, wash (in cold water) and hang your clothes to dry and leave the work up to the sky.
